How To Design a Room Your Kids Want to Sleep In

We always knew our oldest child would migrate from his current nursery to the largest room in the house. Our son recently turned two, and we felt the best way to surprise him with a new room was to make it apart of his birthday celebration. Our son loves dinosaurs, and we decided to make the theme match his excitement for them. Here are 5 tips you can utilize when designing your kids next bedroom space.

Blue Dresser | Circular Wood Mirror | T-Rex Lamp | Dinosaur Bean Bag | Wooden Bookshelf Set | Toddler Spindle Bed | Dinosaur Framed Art | Name Art | Dinosaur Mural

1. Pick a theme they love and can grow into

Our son loves dinosaurs and I felt it was age appropriate for him until he starts kindergarten. Selecting a theme our child can mature into allows me plan a new room every other year. However, if he wanted to change his room before then I would be okay with that. I really do love to decorate.

2. Incorporate colors or a style that matches the rest of your home

Our house has a grandmillenial meets coastal theme. We have a ton of blue in our house followed by pine, rattan, and whites. I wanted blue in his room because it would flow with the rest of our home. However, it’s important to keep in account children don’t like what adults like. Selecting blue throughout his room was the one element I wanted to be consistent with the rest of the house. All other elements I wanted to feel like his space and appropriate for our son. We picked 101 paint colors from Sherwin Williams but decided on Something Blue.

We decided to take a chance and do something we haven’t done in any other room of the house, blue furniture. It was a real challenge for me, but the best way to tackle his navy blue dressers were to go monochromatic. In an effort to give a room a pop and his furniture a more high-end look, we replaced his blue knobs with gold hardware. It gave his dressers a polished look and made it a true dupe to the Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrel sets.

3. Design an eye catching accent wall

When our son walked into his room for the first time, the accent wall was the first item to catch his attention. We went with a monochromatic room and this dinosaur silhouette went perfectly with the rest of the room. We also incorporated a name plate above his mural that is navy. We chose not to show his name plate for safety purposes, but it is a true show stopper! A great way to create an accent wall is to paint one wall a different color than the rest. We decided to a more elaborate accent wall and chose a mural from Etsy. Etsy has some awesome murals and wallpapers to help create an accent wall of your choice. I can’t recommend Etsy enough as they are a lot small business owners with a ton of creativity. I’ve attached our son’s mural here.

4. Create a reading nook for them to relax

My son loves to read and I wanted him to be able to reach all the books in his room. We found a dinsosaur bean bag that is green (the secondary color to his room). Its so soft and a spot he likes to sit in while we read to him. Having his bookshelf eye level to him gives him a sense of empowerment and ability to grab books on his own.

5. Incorporate a play space

A play space in a child’s room does not have to be big. In fact, our is rather small. We selected a toy basket that was rattan to put all his cars and dinosaurs in. Okay, the toy basket looks like a dinosaur but its a giraffe. We can pretend its one! Since adding his toys to his room our son has dragged us into his space more times than one to play and we encourage it!

Other way to incorporate dinosaurs (or any theme) into your child’s room are sheets, lamps, piggy banks, rugs and pillows. Don’t feel as though you must do an exact rendition of whatever theme you select. Go out your comfort zone and choose patterns or colors that resemble your theme. Incorporating patterns and colors that are slightly more mature helps your child’s room last longer with age and can be a great way of maturing the space with the rest of the house.

Hopefully these suggestions will help you decorate a space your kid will want to sleep in. So far, we haven’t had any issues with our son coming into our bedroom (YAY!), and we hope it helps you too.
